The struggle in conscientious, high-end design is justifying materials and energy for a short-lived product. One solution is to minimize all inputs, the other is to maximize utility. With this concept-turned-production crib I extended the lifetime of the piece to, well, a lifetime by converting it into a full-sized adult desk.

District Concept Crib, shown here prior to its October 2012 launch at the ABC Kids Expo in Las Vegas. The concept was made with reclaimed white oak from a train depot.

The transition to production entailed several changes to meet ASTM standards of uniformity. Reclaimed wood was necessarily replaced with FSC American white oak, tongue-and-groove joinery stiffened the L-slats, and the desk conversion was redesigned to minimize bowing and visible joints.
