Nursery Works needed an American-made crib at the $1000 price point to fill an attainable luxury position in their recently relaunched line of high end children’s furniture.
I wanted to design a crib that was crisp and modern, yet warm and inviting. By using ash, we were able to make the frame very thin and strong, a quality that's emphasized by elevating the whole piece on thin legs. The intensely open grain of ash brings a lot of depth and tactility to otherwise straightforward painted, white slats.
The tops of the crib end panels remove, transforming the crib into a reading nook with the addition of a seat and back cushion.
Made in America was an imperative, and I helped to bring this new Michigan-based vendor up to Nursery Works standards over the course of 16 months as we developed prototypes; arranged and approved vendors for hardware, finishes, and packaging; and approved production methods.
